After several Madison alderpersons announced they would no longer be running for reelection in April 2021, community members announced their candidacy for local government. Long-time activist and Madison native, Tyson Vitale, announced his bid for District 16 to replace Michael Tierney. As a young person of color and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Vitale has been involved in state campaigns and has served on the boards of the Democratic Party of Dane County and OutReach LGBT Center.
Running for the District 6 seat in Madison is Shawn Matson, a progressive candidate who marks his campaign as being proudly antiracist, queer, and a member of the Madison Teachers Union. Matson is vying to replace long-term alder Marsha Rummel.
In Fitchburg, out candidate Steven Heller announced in late December that he would run for City Council in District 2. Steven is a project manager and father of two children. Heller will run against the reelection campaign of three-term incumbent Julia Arata-Fratta.
