Why we walk
We walk to make the fight against AIDS stronger.
Today, more than 6,300 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Wisconsin and it’s estimated that an additional 1,500+ are undiagnosed but living with the disease. We walk to make sure that anyone who is living with HIV in Wisconsin has access to life-saving health care and social programs.
When you register and fundraise, you help people living with HIV live longer, healthier lives.
You guarantee that HIV care and treatment is available to all people living with the disease, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or economic status.
Did you know that people with AIDS in Wisconsin live longer than anywhere else in the nation?
When you walk and raise pledges, you make this happen. Your efforts for AIDS Walk Wisconsin support the ARCW Medical Center, providing quality medical, dental and mental health care, and social services for people living with HIV/AIDS throughout the state.
Every dollar raised for AIDS Walk Wisconsin:
- Stays in Wisconsin for the fight against AIDS.
- Assures access to comprehensive quality HIV health care and social services, regardless of ability to pay or economic status.
- Feeds families. Imagine having to make a choice between life-sustaining medications and food. Many people living with HIV have to do just that – choose between medications and food. Every year, the ARCW Food Pantries distribute 400 tons of food statewide to ensure that clients and their families receive nutritious food.
- Gives shelter. No one with HIV should ever be homeless. The ARCW housing program is nationally recognized for helping patients overcome homelessness through unique housing services that lead to stable, long-term housing. In 2012, ARCW provided shelter and rent assistance to 685 people living with or affected by HIV.
- Protects the legal rights of people with HIV. Many people living with HIV still face discrimination, denial of benefits and even the refusal by health care professionals to provide treatment. ARCW legal services provides counsel on discrimination, health care directives, estate planning and more. In 2012, ARCW attorneys handled 927 legal matters for people living with HIV.
- Provides access to nationally-recognized health care. ARCW has become a national leader in HIV/AIDS health care, treatment, prevention and support. Through integrated medical, dental and mental health clinics, as well as dedicated social services, HIV patients in Wisconsin gain the health care and support they need for long-term survival with HIV disease.
