LGBTQ in STEM

October 14, 2020 @ 10:00 am - December 2, 2020 @ 11:00 am

Join on four Wednesdays from 10-11 (we’re posting the videos after too) to hear from LGBTQ grad students in STEM fields!

The LGBTQ in STEM panels are a collaboration between the Graduate Leadership & Development Committee (GLDC) and the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC). The goal of these panels is to provide an outreach opportunity for LGBTQ grad students to share their experiences about being in STEM with undergrads and high school students who want to pursue STEM careers.

LGBTQ students are disproportionately underrepresented in STEM due to a lack of mentorship from older LGBTQ peers, unwelcoming work environments where people are not encouraged to be out, and a devaluation of femininity in STEM. Additionally, racial discrimination and sexism make it increasingly hard for LGBTQ students to thrive in primarily white institutions and cis male-dominated fields.

These panels aim at addressing these issues and helping younger students navigate being LGBTQ in STEM.
