SUMMARY:Divine Mythologies + Other Luminous Voices
DESCRIPTION:This event: May be of interest to the LGBTQ community || On April 16\, 2026\, Kanopy Dance Opens\nDivine Mythologies:\nAnna Sokolow’s Epic “Odes” + Other Luminous Voices \nA Groundbreaking Collaboration\nBetween Kanopy Dance &\nNYC’s Sokolow Theatre/ Dance Ensemble\nFeaturing a Fusion Performance\nof Anna Sokolow’s Epic “Odes”\nTwo Exciting Modern Dance Companies Performing Together in Two Cities \nApril 16-19\, 2026\nPromenade Hall\, Overture Center for the Arts Madison\, WI\nThursday 7pm\, Friday 7pm\, Saturday 4 & 7pm\, Sunday 2pm\nPromenade Hall\, Overture Center for the Arts\nhttps://www.overture.org /Box Office 608.258.4141 \nSaturday\, April 25 & Sunday\, 26\,2026\, 7PM\nMMAC theater 248 West 60th Street\, New York City.\nhttps://ci.ovationtix.com/36899/production/1265085\nMadison\, WI…February\,22 2026…NYC’s Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble and Madison\, WI based Kanopy Dance will present Divine Mythologies: Anna Sokolow’s Epic “Odes” + Other Luminous Voices (Divine Mythologies) at concerts in Madison\, WI at the Overture Center for the Arts April 16-19\,2026\, and in New York City at the MMAC theater \, April 25 & 26\, 2026. \nThe collaboration marks the first time ever that two companies jointly perform Anna Sokolow’s (Sokolow) epic masterpiece “Odes”\, a 20-minute-long choreography in three sections that debuted in 1965. A luminous vision of humanity inspired by the turbulent world of Greek mythology\, Sokolow’s “Odes” is set to the music of Edgard Varèse\, a progressive French/American composer and acclaimed pioneer of electronic music. \nSokolow (February 9\, 1910 – March 29\, 2000) was an international cultural icon\, daughter of immigrants\, and social activist whose powerful theatrical choreography profoundly shaped the course of modern dance. Her transformative work remains a vital force–a powerful choreographic voice that has never been silenced. \n“Odes” demands intense physical concentration and dramatic depth\, with choreography that poses multiple challenges in timing\, dynamics\, balance\,\nand projection through space. It is a singular artistic challenge that will require the 20 dancers (cast from the two companies) to work in harmony as one—yet sensitively maintain their individuality. \nThe program also features Kanopy co- artistic director’s Lisa Thurrell’s (Thurrell) Ekstasi\, a celestial journey inspired St. Peter’s Basilica\, the cathedral of art in the Vatican City\, that chronicles the ecstasy and the agony of pursuing a divine path or transcendence. Staged against a tableau of Renaissance Baroque masterpieces\, including those of Bernini\, Giotto and Michelangelo\, Thurrell’s choreography artfully lifts the dancers—costumed in ethereal in flowing silks- in their spiritual ascent with a stunning series of ensemble pieces\, a solo and duets. \nAnd Kanopy’s co-artistic director\, Robert E. Cleary\, presents Transformations\, a tumultuous and poignant solo\, examining the search for individual growth and mindfulness. \nDivine Mythologies: Anna Sokolow’s Epic “Odes” + Other Luminous Voices\nMadison\, WI\nApril 16-19\, 2026 (Thursday 7pm\, Friday 7pm\, Saturday 4 & 7pm\, Sunday 2pm)\nOverture Center for the Arts\n201 State Street\nhttps://www.overture.org /Box Office 608.258.4141 \nNew York City\nApril 25 & April 26\,2026\, 7PM\nMMAC theater\n248 West 60th Street\, New York City.\nFor NYC Tickets: https://ci.ovationtix.com/36899/production/1265085 \nAbout Kanopy Dance\nMadison\, WI based Kanopy Dance\, an Overture resident company\, cultivates the dynamic growth of modern dance— advancing important artistic benchmarks by training emerging talent\, presenting original works featuring internationally renowned guest stars\, and creative collaborations. Among its accolades\, in 2024\, Kanopy was one of only six companies word-wide vetted in observing “GRAHAM100”- a three-season celebration of Martha Graham Dance Company’s 100th Anniversary- with its production of Graham: In HER Voice.\nMost recently\, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts filmed Kanopy’s acclaimed Polaris\, starring Daystar/Rosalie Jones\, founder of the first indigenous modern dance company in the U.S.\, Daystar: Contemporary Dance Drama of Indian America\, and Daniel Fetecua Soto\, former soloist\, Limón Dance Company for permanent inclusion in the prestigious Jerome Robbins Dance Division Archives. located in Lincoln Center.\nIn addition to its professional company\, Kanopy maintains a Studio Company of pre-professional dancers\, (Kanopy 2)\, and operates the Kanopy Dance Academy offering comprehensive dance training for all levels and ages. https://kanopydance.org/ \nAbout Sokolow Théâtre/Dance Ensemble\nSokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble is the modern dance company dedicated to presenting Ms. Sokolow’s vast body of emotionally riveting work. Over a 70-year career\, Anna Sokolow continuously broke the silo of modern dance\, focusing on the human experience and accessing any genre to fulfill her artistic purpose. Her masterpieces remain relevant to our times and touch the hearts of all people as we struggle with the universal issues of living\, regardless of differences in place and culture. The company’s projects include reconstruction\, reimagination\, deconstruction\, historical performance\, teaching\, lectures\, archiving\, and partnering with contemporary choreographers—all modes through which we step inside Sokolow’s masterworks and draw from this perspective to better frame our future. ST/DE was founded by Sokolow protege Jim May and is currently under the artistic direction of Samantha Geracht. SUMMARY:"Our Town"
DESCRIPTION:A cast of First Congregational Church Members invite you back to Grovers Corners for a walk through the daily life of Thornton Wilder’s “OUR TOWN” on Saturday\, April 17 for a 7:00 pm Stage Reading in the Sanctuary at First Congregational Church\, 1609 University Ave\, Madison. This production is in honor of Thornton Wilder’s birthday. \nMadison’s First Congregational Church has close ties with the playwright Thornton Wilder and claims him as one of their own.  Wilder’s family were members of the Congregation in his formative years at the turn of the last century.  Thornton was born in Madison on April 17 in 1897. With his father\, a devout Congregationalist\, and superintendent of the Sunday school\, Thornton spent a considerable amount of time at the First Congregational Church building on West Washington Ave just a block off the square.  (The Congregation moved to its current building on the corner of University Ave and Breese Terrace in 1930.) \nThe 50th anniversary of Wilder’s death this past December sparked an already long standing drive for First Congregational’s Director of Christian Education\, Jeff Rabe to bring ‘Our Town’ to the First Cong stage.   Rabe is also the Director/Producer of this theatrical production. The Cast for this production range from novice first-timers to seasoned actors with professional credits. This is a true First Congregational project with a cast of dedicated actors paying homage to ‘one of their own.’ \n‘Our Town’\, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning classic has stirred audiences’ perception of life since its premiere\, prodding theatergoers to reexamine their own existence since those lines were first shared from the stage at the McCarter Theater in Princeton\, N.J. in 1938.  As this is a stage-reading\, actors will read from scripts as they draw the audience into the lives of the residents of Grover’s Corners.  With the feel of an old fashioned radio show\, sound effects will enhance the story telling. \nNo admission will be charged but folks are encouraged to bring non-perishable food goods and/or socks to be shared with community agencies serving those in need.  Parking is available in the church lots and UW lots for free after 5 pm.

SUMMARY:BE SEEN: Celebrating the 1966 Sip-In
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we come together for an “hour of power” and a toast to our elders on Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026 — as we celebrate the battle for our rights to BE SEEN\, be served\, and assemble as an LGBTQ community.\n\nFluid and the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project are joining an Instagram Live national celebration connecting hundreds of queer spaces across America. Photographs and video clips will be collected for the Project.\n\nAll guests are encouraged to use hashtag #SipIn60 in social posts.\n\nDid you know? Until 1982\, it was perfectly legal for any bar to refuse service to known or suspected homosexuals in Wisconsin.\nBartenders who served gay men or lesbians could lose their licenses; bars who allowed them to congregate were often declared “disorderly houses” and closed down. Gay bars were forced to operate under the radar\, paying the police for protections\, and customers were treated as second-class citizens.\nToday\, this may seem unthinkable. To our elders\, it was just everyday life.\n\nOn April 21\, 1966\, the Mattachine Society organized a protest to challenge discrimination and assert our First Amendment rights to assemble. After announcing they were gay and requesting service\, they were immediately refused — and the moment was photographed and received widespread media attention.\n\nThe Sip-In had a domino effect that led to the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. This national event offers a chance for the community to come together and celebrate LGBTQ history\, at a time when we are being censored\, excluded\, and erased.\n\nThe Sip-In Celebration is sponsored by the LGBTQ Heritage Alliance\, of which the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project was a founding member in 2024.\n\n Come celebrate LGBTQ history and activism as we connect to the NYC anchor event at Julius’ bar via Zoom and Instagram Live.\n\n Photos of Mattachine Society members and Sip-In participants Dick Leitsch\, John Timmons\, Craig Rodwell\, and Randy Wicker.
