JOB SUMMARY: The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries is now seeking candidates for its Diversity Resident Librarian Program, which was established in 2013. This program provides an opportunity for entry-level librarians from diverse backgrounds to begin their professional careers and develop skills and experience in academic librarianship. As members of the ACRL Diversity Alliance, we are committed to “increasing the hiring pipeline of qualified and talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.” (ACRL Diversity Alliance Website). This is a three-year placement designed to encourage and promote professional growth and development of recent graduates.

This residency will offer opportunities to support student research and learning, and contribute significantly to the Libraries’ instructional services. The position will provide instruction with a focus on foundational research skills, primarily for undergraduate general education courses. The librarian will identify and develop assessment and instruction strategies to measure meaningful impact and expand the instruction program’s reach and success. This position will collaborate with staff in the Libraries’ Teaching & Learning Programs office and with library instruction staff to create policies, procedures, and documentation in support of the instruction program.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides a wide variety of professional library services which may include the areas of teaching, learning, public services, circulation, reference, selection, and outreach to support creative exploration, intellectual growth and, scholarly pursuits. Provides input on policies and procedures to contribute to services and operations and assist in continual service improvement and innovation.

  • 5% Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
  • 5% Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with vendors and professional colleagues
  • 5% Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions particularly related to situations that are complex in nature
  • 35% Designs, develops, and delivers instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
  • 15% Assists with the coordination of day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
  • 10% Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area
  • 5% Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
  • 5% Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state levels
  • 15% Collaborates on assessment, evaluation, and advancement of library instruction, strategically focused on general education courses.
  • Provides significant instructional services for undergraduate general education courses by designing, developing, and delivering library instruction in a variety of formats.
  • Collaborates on assessment and evaluation of library instruction, primarily for general education courses.
  • Uses strong written and verbal communication skills to facilitate successful project management.
  • Participates actively on library committees related to instruction and areas of interest.
  • Keeps current with developments in pedagogy and librarianship via engagement in professional organizations and professional development.
  • Assists with the coordination of day-to-day functions of the Library instruction service.

Master’s Degree
MA/MS in Library/Information Studies or equivalent degree (degree conferred in last three years)
QUALIFICATIONS: Required Qualifications:
– Demonstrated interest in academic libraries
– Demonstrated interest (or knowledge) in instruction
– Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
– Strong team communication skills to support successful project management
– Comfort with public speaking
– Demonstrated interest in working with collaborators to accomplish goals, improve processes, or complete projects

WORK TYPE: Full Time: 100%

Typical work hours (M-F). Hybrid. Expected onsite minimum 20%, with onsite instruction responsibilities a priority.

APPOINTMENT TYPE, DURATION: Terminal, 36 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding
SALARY: Minimum $53,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
