This is professional work in business and technical analysis, the development or support of automated management information systems/services within Metro Transit. This work is characterized by the application of professional skills in providing standardized developmental and support activities, and serving as a contributing member on team efforts. The employee, under the general supervision of the Transit Information Services Coordinator, exercises professional judgment in completing assigned tasks.
The successful candidate will be hired as a Transit Information Systems Specialist 1 or 2 level based on qualifications, and the level will be determined at the time of hire. Starting salary for the Transit Information Systems Specialist 1 is $62,967.58. Starting salary for the Transit Information Systems Specialist 2 is $68,299.40.

This series is structured to provide for career progression from Transit Information Systems Specialist 1 to 2 as a function of employee expertise (as gained through experience). Progression to a Transit Information Systems Specialist 3 is normally contingent upon the availability of budgeted position vacancies and is normally accomplished by competition or position study.  It should be noted that higher level positions within the series are characterized by increasing independence, expertise, judgment, discretion, responsibility, initiative, coordination, planning, conflict resolution and leadership.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Transit Information Systems Specialist 1

  • Participate in the development of user applications and/or the enhancement of existing applications within well-defined parameters as a member of a development team.
  • Develop and support database applications using current development language(s).
  • Assist customers with troubleshooting and testing user applications, hardware and systems software.
  • Setup office computer hardware and configure and install software.
  • Develop and analyze customer requirements and translate application design specifications to current development language including inputs, processing and outputs.
  • Actively participate with internal teams to improve departmental programs and services.
  • Present or participate with customer training using computer hardware and software.
  • Perform project support for Intelligent Transportation projects, as assigned.  For example, technology hardware equipment installed within the facilities and on-board the vehicles, their configuration and servicing.
  • Perform related research and development, write technical specifications and work with consultants to ensure contract compliance.
  • Provide liaison to the City Information Technology Department, as required.
  • Support computerized records management system and the office automation software.
  • Establish proper security controls and administer security and perform troubleshooting activities.
  • Follow/recommend documentation formats and draft proper documentation (e.g., user manuals) for both hardware and software operations.
  • Act as a primary person for Metro IS to support the systems and applications used in day-to-day operations by all transit units.
  • As part of Metro IS team, function as being on-call on a rotational basis to support 24×7 operations.
  • Perform related work as required.

Transit Information Systems Specialist 2

  • Perform all work consistent with the class of Transit Information Systems Specialist 1 with a greater degree of skill and independence.
  • Ensure application designs, systems hardware, software and networks are compatible and in alignment with the practices and goals of the department.
  • Establish documentation formats and ensure that the proper documentation (e.g., user manuals) is prepared for both hardware and software operations.
  • Ability to independently handle on-call support duties.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience (at the Transit Information Systems Specialist 1 level):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field

-OR-

  • Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field; and
  • Two (2) years directly related experience

Training and Experience (at the Transit Information Systems Specialist 2 level):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field; and
  • Two (2) years of directly related experience

-OR-

  • Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field; and
  • Four (4) years of directly related experience

If the applicant does not possess the specific requirements outline above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:

Two (2) years of professional experience applying the following:

  • Desktop and server computer system technology (hardware and software) and its effective application
  • Computer system design and database programming languages such as Microsoft SQL, Visual Basic, Access, etc.
  • Relevant networking considerations

Special Requirements
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.

Employee will be required to be on-call (including outside of regular work schedule) for a week every third or fourth week. There is on-call pay for on-call time outside of regular work hours.

Physical Requirements:

Work is primarily sedentary in nature and performed in an office environment. Employees will be expected to use standard office equipment such as telephone, computer, copier, calculator, and fax machine. Employees must have the physical strength, coordination, and acuity to set up, install, and test computers as assigned. Employees may be expected to visit sites throughout the City in order to troubleshoot issues.
