Mineral Point Celebrates its Legacy of Historic Preservation

Mineral Point, WI – Ask most people what impresses them about Mineral Point and you are likely to hear something about the historic architecture. The buildings that have been so lovingly preserved here are definitely aha moments for many. As the first city in Wisconsin to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is fitting that we celebrate historic preservation. Our four-day celebration of Historic Preservation takes place May 4-7, 2017.

The celebration kicks off with a free presentation at the Mineral Point Opera House at 7 pm on Thursday, May 4. Nancy Pfotenhauer, Mineral Point Library Archives Curator, presents images of houses, street scenes and town views from the 1800s till now.  Projects that have used old photographs as guides for restoration will be highlighted.

Friday night finds us the Walker House enjoying a pasty dinner. Following dinner, Will Fellows, author of Passion to Preserve presents Behind the Façade of Historic Preservation: Gay Sensibility and the Passion to Preserve: a photo-illustrated exploration of gay men’s extraordinary involvement in rescuing, restoring, and preserving old buildings and other forms of the material culture of the past. Reservations are required ($25).

A tour of historic homes in a variety of time periods and styles is featured on Saturday. Tickets ($15) can be purchased at 210 Commerce Street (at the intersection of High and Commerce downtown Mineral Point) or at Orchard Lawn, 234 Madison Street. Tickets will go on sale at 9:30. The tour runs from 10 – 4.

We are delighted to welcome TEN DOLLAR HOUSE for two performances at the Mineral Point Opera House – Saturday evening at 7 pm and Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. This is the story of Bob Neal and Edgar Hellum, who against all odds in the midst of the Great Depression in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, created a legacy of historic preservation that lives on today. This is your opportunity to see the play performed in the community where it happened. Tickets ($15) are on sale now by calling the Mineral Point Chamber (608.987.3201) or Berget Jewelers (608.987.3218) or purchasing on line at brownpapertickets.com.

The Chicago Tribune calls it “a true warmly-wrought story.”  Broadway World says: “Kinnebrew and Myer’s wordplay skillfully guides this story through its course. Their piece is clever, witty. And heartbreaking – touching upon every nuance one could ask for from a well-crafted play. It’s no surprise that Ten Dollar House as already been met with such renown. As wordsmiths, Kinnebrew and Meyer too are preserving history in their own way by sharing a story of hard work and discriminating love.”

Sunday morning coffee and treats at the Education Center at Pendarvis Historic Site features a free presentation by Will Fellows as he shares some thoughts on Pendarvis, the men who created it, and the man whose old-house enterprise in the 1920s was an important inspiration for them. Join us for coffee, tea saffron cakes and tea biscuits.

The weekend wraps up with a matinee performance of Ten Dollar House at the Mineral Point Opera House at 2 pm.
