MADISON, Wis. – Overture Center announced 2016’s Tommy Award recipients. Schools and individuals receive awards at the 7th annual Tommy Awards show held in Overture Hall on Sunday, June 12 at 6 p.m. The show is the culminating event for the year-long Tommy Awards program which encourages, recognizes and honors excellence in high school musical theatre by featuring performances from recipient productions.
“Our participating high schools continue to amaze us with their hard work and dedication to performing a variety of musical productions,” said Tim Sauers, Overture Center Vice President for Programming and Community Engagement. “It is truly an honor to attend many of the shows each year and witness the growth from students and production staff encouraged by the reviews and feedback through the Tommy Awards program. With the support of the communities, the program is a great success for Overture Center and we are excited to announce an expansion for the next season to include more Wisconsin schools.”

The 69 recipients for Outstanding Lead Performers (list attached) are eligible to audition for The National High School Musical Theater Awards competition, and two outstanding performers (announced at a later date) will advance to New York City on Monday, June 27 at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre.
Educators, industry professionals, and theater experts review productions, provide valuable feedback and advice, and honor schools and individuals’ achievements with category-based awards. Named for Wisconsin-born Broadway star Tom Wopat, the Tommy Awards encourage, recognize, and honor excellence in high school musical theater in Southern Wisconsin.

In the next season of The Tommy Awards, Overture will collaborate with The Grand Theater in Wausau, Wis. to expand the program to more Wisconsin schools, and will also continue working with Marcus Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Tommy Awards are funded in part by American Girl’s Fund for Children, American Family Insurance, A. Paul Jones Charitable Trust, John A. Johnson Foundation-a component fund of the Madison Community Foundation, Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, Sara and Eliot Butler, Sandy and Jun Lee, and contributions to Overture Center for the Arts. Additional support from Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television.
Overture Center will partner with Wisconsin Public Television for the fourth consecutive year to record the ceremony and air highlights on WPT stations in the fall.
