Public support of the LGBT community has grown significantly among Wisconsinites according to new poll

Public support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community has grown significantly and quickly among Wisconsinites, according to a new poll commissioned by Fair Wisconsin.  These findings are based on a Wisconsin statewide survey written and conducted in March by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, of 700 likely 2016 voters.

“Just like the rest of the country, Wisconsinites support fairness and equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community much more than even just a few years ago,” said Katie Belanger, Fair Wisconsin President & CEO.  “I have said this many times in the last year or two, but this is just another example of how the question of both social and legal equality, including marriage, is no longer a question of ‘if,’ but ‘when.’”

Key Findings:

• Wisconsin has become significantly more accepting of the LGBT community in a short amount of time.
• Gay rights groups now enjoy the same standing and credibility as other political interest groups.
• Many voters are self-aware enough to recognize their evolution.
• Support for marriage equality in Wisconsin stands at a 51 percent majority.
• Other civil rights protections for LGBT couples elicit stronger support.
• Voters overwhelmingly oppose the 1915 Marriage Evasion law.
• Voters support basic discrimination protections for the transgender community.
• Republican and conservatives voters are also experiencing a cultural shift in acceptance.
