Beaver Dam Pride

The month of June is Pride month for the LGBTQ+ community as that was the month when the Stonewall riots took place. Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there’s still work to be done. Pride month is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ people, education in LGBTQ+ history and raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. and works to achieve equal justice and opportunity for LGBTQ+.

Beaver Dam DEI Taskforce’s goal is to meet the diverse needs of all individuals seeking services and provide an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Pride events are about human rights; they empower LGBTQ+ individuals to reclaim the rights and freedoms they are denied, and the public space they are often excluded from. Homophobic and transphobic hate crimes have a devastating impact on LGBTQ+ communities. The fear of being targeted pushes people to hide their identity. When attackers go unpunished it spreads distrust towards the authorities. What’s more, these hate crimes are under-reported, which means people don’t get the protection they urgently need. Pride events are important for LGBTQ+ folks to feel less alone and find safe, local resources.
