For the first time, the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation will offer a docent-led historic architecture walking tour in Maple Bluff, Sun., July 16, 2017. The tour will focus on Cambridge Road’s rich variety of architectural styles, while shedding light on the lives of prominent Madison architects, and civic and business leaders who made these unique homes possible.

The 75-minute tours will depart every half hour from the corner of Lakewood Boulevard and Cambridge Road starting at 10 a.m. with the last tour departing at 2 p.m. To ensure a place on the tour, order advanced timed tickets at www.madisonpreservation.org or call (608) 441-8864. The cost is $30, $20 for students with ID, and $25 for Madison Trust members. A limited number of tickets may be available on site the day of the event. Free parking is available on Lakewood Boulevard. Participants are asked to avoid parking on Cambridge Road.

“Some of the first homes in Maple Bluff were built on Cambridge Road, and since the landowners hired Madison’s best architects, the street reflects a unique variety of architectural styles,” said Teri Venker, who researched and developed this special fundraising tour for the Madison Trust. “Tour goers will also learn about the many fascinating people and businesses that shaped Madison, while generating the resources to build these architectural gems.”

The earliest homes on the street started in 1914 and were in marked contrast to the large homes early entrepreneurs built on crowded Mansion Hill. Successful East side farm implement businesses that met the agricultural needs of the booming Wisconsin countryside contributed to the building – by two brothers – of two of the largest homes on the street, one of which is now the governor’s residence.

The Madison Trust for Historic Preservation is dedicated to the conservation of Madison’s historic places through advocacy and education. A volunteer board of trustees guides the independent, nonprofit, community-supported organization. Madison Trust works with the Madison Landmarks Commission and other municipal agencies as well as Historic Madison Inc., the Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Wisconsin Trust for Historic Preservation. Madison Trust is a Local Partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
TDS Construction and Isthmus make the Maple Bluff Cambridge Road walking tour possible through generous contributions.
