Volunteer Visual Artists (photographers and illustrators) support Our Lives by bringing LGBTQ+ stories to life through photography, illustration, and other visual art mediums. Visual artists are responsible for capturing community events, creating original artwork, and showcasing the people and experiences that make Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ communities vibrant. As individual contributors who report to the Editorial staff, visual artists are accountable for accepting assignments that align with their availability and level of expertise, and delivering on those commitments in a timely manner that supports Our Lives publication deadlines. There is an opportunity for advertising trade for visual artists who operate their own photography or illustration businesses.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Visual artists will coordinate with the necessary individuals, groups, or businesses for the purpose of achieving desired visual storytelling outcomes for each accepted assignment in a timely manner
• Visual artists will ask appropriate questions and take direction as needed related to accepted assignments
• Visual artists will act with integrity while on an accepted assignment as representatives of Our Lives
• Visual artists will communicate with the Editorial Board of Directors should any concerns arise regarding an assignment, including deadline concerns 

Desired Skills

• All visual artists must have strong visual storytelling capabilities
• All visual artists must have the ability to interact and collaborate in a professional manner with a wide variety of subjects
• All visual artists must have the ability to manage deadlines, deliverables, and multiple assignments independently with minimal supervision
• All visual artists must have strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
• Photographers must have experience photographing people from diverse backgrounds, including the ability to accurate light and photograph people of all skin tones
• Photographers must be proficient in event photography, including the use of off-camera flash in challenging lighting conditions 

Commitments

• Reliable transportation and the ability to drive to and from accepted assignments is required
• Flexible scheduling based on the needs of each assignment
• Estimated commitment: approximately 2-4 hours per month
• Volunteer-based role within a collaborative and supportive network 

Assignment

This role reports to the Editorial staff of Our Lives Media.
