ArtWrite Collective launches new zine, writing workshop

by | Aug 31, 2015 | 0 comments

ArtWrite Collective, a local non-profit group that wields art as an agent for justice and equity, is co-creating with writer and shamanic practitioner Marcelle Richards to produce the first issue of dreamzine, a zine for visionary writing and art for social change. The content of the first issue will be themed “Liminal Messages” and will feature material produced over the course of a three-part workshop series, “Liminal Messages: Sacred Storytelling from Between Worlds”. Applications are now being accepted.

This limit-pushing workshop will encourage creatives to engage deeply with their internal landscapes, as well as surrounding nature and elements to empower participants to create social change through the vulnerable yet powerful practice of releasing one’s creative craft into the world. We are all creators. This workshop is designed to draw those who occupy liminal spaces of identity: it is from a place of where edges meet that growth and new visions can come into being. Genderfluid, genderqueer, non-binary, and trans* individuals are especially encouraged to apply; in some societies, those who bridge the divine masculine and feminine occupied a sacred role, and to much of the world, this sense of honoring those who could hold both within has been lost. This workshop is intended to help reclaim that space, though anyone who is a boundary-walking creative is welcome to apply.

The workshop will be held from 6-8 pm* on Oct. 4, 11, and 18 in the warming house at Indian Lake, huddled around a wood-burning stove during the height of fall: the season of transformation. Nature walks, ritual, shamanic journeying, and community-building will drive the creation of content by helping participants step fully into their essence, remove creative blocks, and reflect their gifts outward with an underlying mission to share what we create with the community to lift others with our words and art; an act of witnessing and being witnessed.

The project will culminate with a zine release and reading beneath a cover of stars atop a hill at Pheasant Branch Conservancy, which will be open to the public.

Please share widely with those who may be interested in applying, or making a donation to assist with scholarships.

Applicants may use the form below. The deadline is Sept. 15, 2015.
