Legislators to introduce bill addressing marriage equality

by | Dec 18, 2015 | 0 comments

MADISON – Joined by couples affected by Wisconsin’s outdated marriage and family law statutes, Reps. Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit), JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee), and Chris Taylor (D-Madison) will announce legislation modernizing Wisconsin’s statutes to reflect current law on marriage equality on Monday, December 21st at 2:30 PM in the Assembly Parlor at the State Capitol.

Following the Supreme Court of the United States ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which granted marriage equality to same-sex couples, Wisconsin same-sex couples are now entitled to the same benefits and responsibilities flowing from marriage as opposite-sex couples. However, some courts have prevented same-sex couples from enjoying these benefits and responsibilities, particularly in adoption and family law. Marriage and its benefits are fundamental rights that all couples deserve, regardless of sex. This bill is a “clean-up” bill to bring Wisconsin statutes in line with Obergefell, and guarantees critical legal protections for same-sex parents and their children.
