UW-Madison grads “take the stage” to fund independent rock-umentary online

Madison, WI, USA — Rock n’ roll is scheduled for a facelift on May 4th 2015 at 10:00AM CDT as budding indie filmmakers Portia Danis and Darla Courtney strive to achieve their funding goal of $13,000 through Kickstarter.com for their directorial debut: a rock-umentary on Girls Rock Camp Madison.

“Take the Stage: A Girls Rock-umentary” follows the journey of determined, female rockin’ youngsters, ages 8-18 at a music intensive one-week long day camp. Instructed and supported by an all-female staff, mostly comprised of professional musicians, girls not only form calluses, but also cultivate a sense of community, learn to collaborate, and most of all, break the current gender barriers existing in music. At the end of the week, campers will have formed a band, written a song, performed live at a local venue and studio recorded. In the space that Girls Rock Camp provides, girls challenge their technical skills and cultural norms that inhibit women such as body image, self esteem and a sense of personal power.

The completion of this film will be groundbreaking for LGBTQ and female filmmakers everywhere. As two queer, female directors working with an all-female production crew, filming in a “no boys allowed” environment, they strive to stand out in the film industry as role models for future filmmakers, setting a new standard for the norm.

The filmmakers are trying to raise the funds for this production through Kickstarter, a crowd-funding platform that lets creators turn their dreams into reality. Those who pledge the Kickstarter campaign will receive a variety of rewards such as early-release DVDs, CDs from award-winning musicians, limited edition T-Shirts, access to behind-the-scenes footage, and more!

This is Portia and Darla’s first time using Kickstarter and their funding goal is modest: $13,000 to cover the cost of video/audio/lighting gear and hiring and feeding crew members. Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform, meaning if creators don’t reach 100 percent of their funding goal, they won’t receive any of the pledges and will go home empty-handed.

“Take the Stage” will only be funded if Darla and Portia reach their goal of $13,000 by May 4, 2015, 10:00am CDT .

With less than two weeks to go and $9,500 more to raise, Portia and Darla could use your help. Interested parties who want to learn more about the project and donate to their campaign go to kickstarter.com/about and search “take the stage.”

The long-time friends and filmmakers have conquered many projects together, but never one so bold as this. Working mostly as broke college students, the two honed their skills with DIY filmmaking techniques. But now, with a bigger budget and professional equipment, Darla and Portia are more than ready to take on the their first feature length documentary.
