“Gender confirmation surgery is an evolving area in plastic surgery. To date, most practicing plastic surgeons are unfamiliar with gender dysphoria and the role of surgery,” Scot B. Glasberg, MD, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said. “At this year’s sessions, our surgeons and allied health professionals will gather the important knowledge to enable them to advance in the discipline.”

The sessions will take place on Friday, October 16 3:30-4:30 for a presentation on Transgender Breast Surgery Juliana Hansen, MD; and William Kuzon, MD, PhD and on Monday, October 19 at 10:15 a.m., “Reconstructive Transgender Surgery” will be presented by Loren Schechter, MD; Lawrence Gottlieb, MD, Stan Monstrey, MD, Paul Weiss, MD, Hsu Ma, MD, Randi Ettner, PhD, and Douglas Ousterhout, MD, DDS.

Media credentials are available to working journalists whose attendance at The Meeting may result in print, online, or broadcast coverage of the ASPS/The PSF/ASMS annual scientific meeting or the work of sponsoring societies. Media is defined as those whose sole professional focus is working for a news media organization to report and publish news. Passes will only be provided to credentialed media on assignment to cover plastic surgery.  Registration is available through Thursday, October 15.  Journalists can also register onsite beginning Friday, October 16, in the ASPS Press Room at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.

“These panels will provide a basis for understanding gender dysphoria and the role surgery plays in caring for transgendered individuals. In addition, they will present an overview of surgical procedures currently available for transgendered individuals and the recognition of the multi-disciplinary nature of care for the transgendered patient,” Glasberg noted.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. Representing more than 7,000 Member Surgeons, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. ASPS advances quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery.
