MILWAUKEE — Courage+, Wisconsin’s first and only licensed nonprofit provider of housing for LGBTQ+ youth, has launched a statewide public art initiative aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young people while celebrating their resilience.
The installation, titled “Courage to Grow,” debuted June 1 as part of Pride Month celebrations and features floral art displays emerging from cracks in sidewalks across Appleton, Madison, Milwaukee and Racine. More than 75 installations have been placed at participating businesses and community locations throughout the state.
Designed to symbolize perseverance and growth in difficult circumstances, the installations serve as a visual reminder of the obstacles many LGBTQ+ youth face and the support available within their communities.
“The ‘plus’ in our name is a promise; a promise to expand our care beyond safe housing and into the daily lives of LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. Their strength and resilience aren’t abstract,” said Brad Schlaikowski, founder of Courage+. “These installations are a way of acknowledging their strength and reminding every young person who sees the art installation that they’re not alone, and there are people in their community who truly care about them.”
The displays are hosted by businesses and organizations known as Bravemakers — community partners that have committed to fostering safe and affirming environments for LGBTQ+ youth. Courage+ describes Bravemakers as businesses, organizations and individuals who actively support LGBTQ+ young people through visibility, advocacy and ongoing education.
Each installation includes a QR code that visitors can scan to access an interactive map showing all participating locations across Wisconsin. The map also helps guide visitors to PrideFest activities, including the Courage+ Youth Area at Milwaukee’s PrideFest celebration June 4-6.
As Pride Month unfolds across Wisconsin, Courage+ leaders hope the installations spark conversations about the importance of affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and encourage more businesses and organizations to become Bravemakers.
Community members can visit the installations throughout June, apply to become a Bravemaker through Courage+, or stop by the organization’s Youth Area during PrideFest in Milwaukee.
