The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its new Walker’s Point location on May 12, marking what leaders describe as a major milestone following a period of financial restructuring and organizational transition.
The event, scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 161 S. 1st St., Suite 100, comes after the Center navigated significant federal funding reductions and implemented what leadership called a “disciplined right-sizing strategy” to stabilize operations and strengthen long-term sustainability.
Founded nearly three decades ago, the Center has served as a hub for LGBTQ+ services in Southeast Wisconsin, providing support related to behavioral health, housing stability, food access, and economic opportunity. Officials say the new facility reflects a smaller, more sustainable operational model focused on expanding clinical services, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the organization’s future.
“This Grand Opening represents more than a new address,” Executive Director Ritchie T. Martin, Jr. said in a statement. “It reflects who we are today — resilient, recalibrated, and rising. This building is about sustainability and long-term strength.”
Martin said the relocation positions the organization to deepen community connections and expand affirming mental health care services for LGBTQ+ people and families across the region.
Several state and local officials are expected to attend the ribbon cutting, including Sara Rodriguez, David Crowley, Cavalier Johnson, José G. Pérez, Peter Burgelis, and JoCasta Zamarripa.
Rodriguez praised the Center’s role in creating affirming spaces and expanding access to resources for LGBTQ+ residents.
“As Lieutenant Governor, I believe the inclusive programming offered by the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is vital,” Rodriguez said. “By creating a safe and welcoming environment, this community brings people together to support one another through shared challenges.”
The May 12 program will include formal remarks from elected officials, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and guided tours of the newly configured facility. Community members, organizational partners, and media representatives are invited to attend.
