Electric Forest, the renowned music and arts festival held annually in Rothbury, Michigan, has earned a reputation for being more than just a massive gathering of music lovers. It’s a celebration of creativity, community, and inclusivity. While the festival is known for its lineup of electronic music, dazzling light displays, and immersive art installations inside of a beautiful forest, its commitment to creating a space for all people—regardless of their background, identity, or orientation—makes it stand out as a truly inclusive experience.

Stepping into the Electric Forest for the first time felt like walking into another world. The moment I passed through the gates, I felt like I was a part of a radically inclusive community. The sprawling, otherworldly landscape of towering trees and neon lights seemed to pulse with life, each corner revealing a new experience. It was unlike any place I’d ever been before, a crossroads of wild beauty and unrestrained creativity.

A Celebration of Diversity

Electric Forest’s tagline has long been “All Are Welcome,” and this philosophy permeates everything about the festival. Whether you’re there for the music, the art, or the sense of community, the festival has always prioritized creating an environment where diversity is celebrated. It has long championed inclusivity in all its forms, including race, gender, and sexuality. For LGBTQ+ attendees, this commitment has become more pronounced over the years, with increasing representation, dedicated spaces, and events specifically designed to foster a sense of belonging.

In 2025, the festival took LGBTQ+ inclusion even further, ensuring that the experience for queer individuals was not just one of tolerance, but one of genuine celebration. The presence of LGBTQ+ programming, entertainers, and themed events contributed to an environment where the community could thrive, express themselves freely, and connect with like-minded individuals in a safe, welcoming environment.

LGBTQ+ Programming at Electric Forest 2025

Electric Forest’s commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity was on full display in 2025, with various specific programs and events tailored to queer festival-goers. One of the standout features was the inclusion of a dedicated “Queer Lounge,” a safe space for LGBTQ+ attendees to meet, socialize, and unwind. This cozy, artfully designed space was free from judgment, allowing individuals to enjoy the festival at their own pace, away from the often-overwhelming crowds.

This year, the festival partnered with the iconic queer brand Dreamland, the force behind major events like WorldPride DC, Pride in Central Park, and Miami’s New Year’s Festival for its 2025 Sunday Pride Takeover. The high-energy production showcased a diverse lineup of artists, including The Knocks x Dragonette, BAMBII, Confidence Man, and TAAHLIAH. Some of the festival’s other inclusive programming highlights included a lively drag brunch experience, which featured a number of standout drag queens plus its Chapel Parties for the People where attendees can connect, celebrate, and express their identities freely.

Safe Spaces and Cultural Engagement

What truly sets Electric Forest apart from other festivals is its palpable sense of community. While the festival is an escape into another world, it is also one grounded in respect, care, and inclusivity. For LGBTQ+ attendees, this atmosphere of acceptance is crucial.

The “safe spaces” initiative at Electric Forest goes beyond simply providing physical spaces for queer attendees. The entire event was built with a culture of inclusivity in mind, with clear messaging throughout the festival about the importance of respect, consent, and mutual support.

Beyond its vibrant parties and performances, Electric Forest actively promotes dialogue around LGBTQIA+ issues through its Plug In Programs, such as The Brainery, which hosts thought-provoking discussions, panels, and workshops on topics like inclusivity, gender identity, advocacy, and more. The festival’s Her Forest initiative, led by its female-driven executive team, also offers safe camping spaces and empowering programming for femme-identifying attendees, addressing critical challenges in the music industry, including misogyny, discrimination, and underrepresentation.

The cultural engagement at Electric Forest was also reflective of this inclusive atmosphere. LGBTQ+ individuals were not just present; they were an integral part of the community. Many attendees dressed in ways that expressed their queer identity. In this sense, Electric Forest didn’t just tolerate queer identities—it actively encouraged their expression and celebration.

Midwestern Roots & Culture

The festival’s setting in Rothbury, Michigan, gives it a unique identity within the festival circuit. Located in the heart of the Upper Midwest, Electric Forest has to navigate the cultural nuances of a region where progressive and conservative values often collide. However, the festival has consistently managed to be a beacon of progressivism, even in a state known for its political divides.

In 2025, the festival continued to challenge norms by creating a space where LGBTQ+ individuals could exist freely. Despite Michigan’s mixed reputation on LGBTQ+ issues, EF has been able to carve out an environment where inclusivity reigns.

The juxtaposition of Electric Forest’s bold, inclusive spirit against the backdrop of the Midwest makes this festival feel all the more significant. It showcases how cultural exchange can happen in unexpected places, and that large-scale events like EF can be powerful tools for creating positive, inclusive change.

I left already looking forward to returning next year, with as many friends as I can get to join me.
