Late Sunday night, law enforcement in Sibley County, Minnesota, captured and arrested Vance Boelter, the 57-year-old man they believe impersonated a law enforcement officer and shot and killed Minnesota Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark the previous day. It is also believed that he is responsible for shooting and seriously wounding Minneosta Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette shortly afterward.

The search for Boelter spanned two days, but it was reported that a manifesto was found in the suspect’s car, which included a list of around 70 names of other people he wished, or intended, to also kill. The list of names included politicians, activists, abortion care providers, and others.

Among the names listed were Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congressman Mark Pocan, along with 9 other Wisconsin lawmakers. The revelation sparked a significant increase in security at the Wisconsin State Capitol on Monday, with Wisconsin state Senate Sergeant at Arms Timothy La Sage announcing that his team had coordinated with the Wisconsin Capitol Police to increase situational awareness practices, strengthen access control points, and update emergency response protocols, in addition to other safety measures.

Baldwin spokesperson Eli Rosen reported that, “Senator Baldwin was informed by law enforcement that she was included on the alleged shooter’s list of names. She is grateful for law enforcement’s swift action to keep the community safe and remains focused on the things that matter most here: honoring the legacy and life of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, praying for the victims who are fighting for their lives, and condemning this abhorrent, senseless political violence.”

Boelter’s manifesto revealed that his plans had been meticulous, thoroughly-researched, and highly premeditated. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the shootings a, “politically motivated assassination,” though authorities have not released any statements pinpointing any specific political ideology upon which his plans and actions were based.

We do, however, know that before going to the homes of Rep. Melissa Hortman and Sen. John Hoffman, Boelter first visited the homes of two other Minnesota lawmakers, one of whom happened to be on vacation, while the other called the police, which prompted Boelter to leave.
