Two New Exhibitions: “Toast” and “Precautionary Measures,” at Art + Literature Laboratory

by | Mar 31, 2016 | 0 comments

MADISON, WI—March 29, 2016) Arts + Literature Laboratory (ALL) presents an exhibition by Madison artist Alaura Seidl. Toast, on view from April 1 through April 23, 2016, is an installation and video-based work reconciling the tension between private confrontations and public spectacles, contemplating both what people do spontaneously and what people perform consciously. The exhibition, screened in its final form, is born of a lifetime of intimate encounters and one night of filming with community members. Alaura is negotiating with memories while investigating accountability for social dilemmas, celebrating queer identity and cleansing the palate.

Alaura Seidl is a queer+feminist educator, writer, and socially engaged artist based in Madison, WI. Alaura is the director of the ArtWrite Collective and a community arts lecturer at UW-Madison. Find more from Alaura at

Concurrent to Toast, Milwaukee- based artist Zina Mussmann presents her recent series of mixed media drawings entitled Precautionary Measures.

Her work revolves around confronting issues of safety, vulnerability, and perceptions of danger and anxiety in our society. The artist writes, “I depict figures who are dressed in protective clothing in an environment that contains no discernible hazard. I incorporate cut-out floral shapes of plants that have varying degrees of toxicity to humans, some of which were used in Victorian art to symbolize impending doom or a treacherous situation. Danger exists here in an unrealized form, as possibilities but not as inevitabilities. The figures are hypervigilant in their preparedness; donning PPE’s, medical masks, space suits, and other shielding garments. They exist in an unceasing state of readiness for perils that may or may not come.”

Zina Mussmann received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 2002 and an MFA from Northern Illinois University in 2008. She has exhibited her work regionally and nationally. Her work has been featured in the Manifest International Painting Annual, The Alchemy Magazine of Literature and Art and Lunch Ticket Magazine. She is also the co-founder of Greymatter, an artist-run space she established with Rachel Quirk in 2011, the curator of an online project called 365 Artists 365 Days, and a faculty member at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
