Freedom Inc. has announced their first-ever Freedom Youth Organizing camp specifically for youth of color, ages 12-18. The two-week day camp will be held in Dane County from August 5-16 and from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The aim of the camp is to develop leadership and community organizing skills that will help create safe communities and schools for youth of color.
During the Freedom Youth Organizing Camp participants will gain skills such as public speaking, door knocking/canvassing, and data analysis that will support the Freedom Youth Squad’s No Cops In School Campaign, which calls on the Madison Metropolitan School District to divest from the police and invest in the leadership, creativity and wellness of youth of color.
Participants will get the chance to network and build relationships with 20 other youth of color in Dane County. At the end of the Freedom Youth Organizing Camp participants will leave with a creative piece of work that will reflect their own solutions rooted in restorative and transformative practices instead of punitive punishment.
*There will be a $200 stipend given to all participants who complete the two-week day camp.
Applications are due Sunday, July 28, 2019. Everyone will be notified of selected participation by Wednesday, July 31, 2019.
