MADISON, WI—Each year, nearly 500,000 people connect with modern and contemporary art through Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) exhibitions and events. By offering lively, engaging, and meaningful events, often free-of-charge, MMoCA connects people with visual art and supports a dynamic arts culture in Madison.
MMoCA announces a robust schedule of talks, events, films, workshops, and kids’ programming for the fall of 2014. Events are free except where noted. All events take place at the museum unless otherwise listed. Additional event information may be found at mmoca.org.
MMoCA Nights Saturday, Sept.13 • 6–9 pm EVENT
Celebrate the opening of From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America with this special MMoCA Nights. Preview the exhibition beginning at 6 pm. MMoCA director Stephen Fleischman will converse with Soth at 6:30 pm in the lecture hall. Afterward, guests will be invited to ask the artist questions about his work and process. Louka will perform live, and hors d’oeuvres from Fresco will round out the evening. Free for MMoCA members / $10 for non-members.
A Conversation with Alec Soth Saturday, Sept.13 • 6:30–7:30 pm TALK
A Lussier Family Lecture
In conversation with MMoCA director Stephen Fleischman, photographer Alec Soth will discuss his creative process, including his approach to photographing his subjects on location using a large-format 8 x 10 camera.
One of the most compelling voices in contemporary photography, Alec Soth captures images that uncover a hidden American experience. From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America, the artist’s first major traveling survey in the United States and shows Soth’s distinct perspective, one in which wandering, embracing serendipity, and the process of telling are as resonant as the photographic record of his remarkable encounters.
Kids’ Art Adventure Sunday, Sept.14 • 1–2:30 pm KIDS
Artists use images to tell stories without words. After viewing the art in StoryBook: Narrative in Contemporary Art, participants will make a series of drawings to tell the beginning, middle, and end of their story in a comic strip or picture book. Six- to ten-year-olds and their families should meet promptly at 1 pm in MMoCA’s lobby.

Somewhere to Disappear Friday, Sept. 26 • 7 pm FILM
Somewhere to Disappear is a film chronicling photographer Alec Soth as he traveled nearly 20,000 miles across the United States for his project Broken Manual. Developed over a period of several years, Broken Manual features photographs of individuals who have chosen to establish a life alone and live “off the grid.”

Organized by MMoCA each spring and fall, Gallery Night is Madison’s citywide celebration of the visual arts. Art lovers can look forward to free demonstrations, new works of art, and live performances at arts venues and galleries across the city.
A Little Brown Mushroom Odyssey: Friday, Oct. 10 • 6:30-7 pm TALK
A Talk by Brad Zellar
Writer and frequent Alec Soth collaborator Brad Zellar talks about his experiences working and traveling with Soth. Soth and Zellar have worked together on book projects such as Conductors of the Moving World, House of Coates, and the seven-part LBM Dispatch, which documents the duo’s travels around the United States.
Gallery Night After Party Friday, Oct. 10 • 9-11 pm EVENT
Join the after party in MMoCA’s lobby from 9-11 pm. With a full schedule including live performances, complimentary snacks, a cash bar by Fresco, and hands-on art activities, this party with a storytelling twist is not to be missed. The Roman Candle Pizzeria will offer complimentary artisan pizza samples (while supplies last) and the galleries will be open late so that patrons can enjoy MMoCA’s newest exhibitions, including StoryBook: Narrative in Contemporary Art, now on view in the Henry Street Gallery.

Warrington Colescott’s Venice
Richard H. Axsom, MMoCA curator, will engage Warrington Colescott in a conversation about his creation of Death in Venice (1971), a portfolio of ten etchings inspired by Thomas Mann’s novella. Colescott will talk about his stay in Venice and how he wished to re-imagine Death in Venice according to his personal read of it. A selection of prints from Colescott’s Death in Venice portfolio is on view in StoryBook: Narrative in Contemporary Art.

A celebration of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Arts Ball is an occasion to build and renew friendships while contributing to the continued financial health of two of Madison’s most beloved cultural institutions. This year’s Holiday Art Fair will kick off with a preview luncheon featuring a spirited runway show. Guests attending this opening event will enjoy delectable foods and will have the entire Holiday Art Fair to themselves for an interlude of crowd-free shopping.

Fun, festive, and full of inspiration, the annual Holiday Art Fair offers a weekend of art, live music and dance performances, gourmet foods, and activities for groups of friends and families. This November, MMoCA and the Overture Center for the Arts will be transformed into a shopping wonderland. Visitors will be able to explore over 80 booths offering art, fine craft, and specialty and gourmet food gifts. The fair takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, making it well timed for thoughtful gift-giving options

The award-winning museum store offers contemporary American craft and fine jewelry. Items purchased at the Museum Store benefit and support MMoCA exhibitions and programs. The Black Friday Sale will offer 25% off of one non-consigned item. Members may add their membership discounts on top of this once-a-year special sale!
MMoCA Nights Friday, Dec. 5 • 6–9 pm EVENT
MMoCA welcomes the public to celebrate the opening of Narayan Mahon: Lands in Limbo. At 6 pm, guests can preview Mahon’s works, which explore the unrecognized countries of Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus, Trandsniestra, Nagorno Karabakh, and Somaliland. Mahon will discuss his photographs and experiences in a gallery talk beginning at 6:30 pm. This MMoCA Nights will offer a live performance by electronic beat maker Coby Ashpis, and hors d’oeuvres from Fresco will round out the evening. Free for MMoCA members / $10 for non-members.
Gallery Talk by Narayan Mahon Friday, Dec. 5 • 6:30–7 pm TALK
Award-winning photographer Narayan Mahon will discuss the experiences he confronted while documenting the unrecognized countries of Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus, Trandsniestra, Nagorno Karabakh, and Somaliland. Lands in Limbo, the artist’s first museum exhibition, captures the day-to-day realities of individuals grappling with matters of cultural and ethnic identity, economic devastation, and self-determination in the face of extreme international isolation. Raising timely questions about the meaning of national sovereignty in the increasingly globalized world of the twentieth-first century, Mahon opens up space for a larger dialogue about the role of documentary photography in contemporary art.

Hours at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art are Tuesday–Thursday (noon–5 pm); Friday (noon–8 pm); Saturday (10 am–8 pm); and Sunday (noon–5 pm). The museum is closed on Mondays.
Admission to exhibitions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is free of charge. MMoCA is supported through memberships and through generous contributions and grants from individuals, corporations, agencies, and foundations. Important support is also generated through auxiliary group programs; special events; rental of the museum’s lobby, lecture hall, and rooftop garden; and sales through the Museum Store.
