On September 16,  the N.E.W. Pride Alive organization announced via social media that they had made the decision to postpone their upcoming Pride event due to, “the increasingly charged political climate.” N.E.W. Pride Alive is Brown County’s annual Pride celebration and was set to take place September 19 and 20 at the Brown County Fairgrounds in De Pere. The event was supposed to include drag performances, live music, vendors, food trucks, activities and games for attendees of all ages, and tables for community organizations.

In their announcement post on Facebook, N.E.W. Pride Alive stated that, “Pride is more than a celebration; it is a movement rooted in the fight for equality and safety. For many in our community, this event is one of the few times they can gather openly and feel affirmed in their identity. Because our Pride is one of the few that takes place in September, it can draw heightened attention during a time of increased tension. We have a responsibility to ensure our space remains safe and welcoming and empowering for everyone. This strategic pause is a reaffirmation of our commitment to safety, visibility, and community.”

In the week that followed their announcement, Green Bay Pride decided to respond to the postponement by organizing a pop-up Pride event on October 4. The new event, called, “We Will Still Be Seen: A Pop-Up Pride,” will begin at noon at City Deck in Green Bay (301 N. Washington St.). The event will feature speakers representing the LGBTQ+ community, who will speak until 1pm. From there, attendees will walk to the Tarlton Theatre (405 W. Walnut St.) for a grassroots block party celebration featuring live music, performances, food trucks, community resources, and more.

As its name implies, the pop-up event is a, “last-minute effort on our part to oppose those who feel it’s fair for anybody to be silenced or to be a second-class citizen,” noted Tarlton Knight, co-owner of the Tarlton Theatre and one of the supporting partners of the event. The Bay Area Council on Gender Diversity is also a partner organization.

Despite the charged political atmosphere and inherent risk that led to N.E.W. Pride Alive’s postponement in the first place, Knight acknowledged that the pop-up organizers could, “take precautions and work with local government and local police departments in order to make sure we have a safe environment, a clean environment where people can still come together and celebrate.”
